Why do an engagement session?
Couples sometimes ask me why I include an engagement session in every wedding package. I think it’s invaluable! There are many reasons why…
1. Since it’s unlikely that you’ve ever worked with a professional photographer, it’s only natural that you feel nervous getting your photo taken in a public setting. Your wedding day “probably” isn’t the best time to take on this added pressure.
In an
engagement session, you both can get comfortable in front of the camera! You become familiar with me and my style firsthand, which only helps your actual wedding day flow much more smoothly and comfortably.
2. I’ll learn more about your personalities, your best expressions, how you interact together, and your quirks. What better way for me to personalize your wedding day images!
3. It’s FUN!!! Not too long into the session, couples warm up and start hamming up for the camera. There’s no pressure, and you have time to relax and just enjoy each other. Show each other some luvin.

Where should we shoot?
I like to shoot in a location that’s important for both of you. Perhaps where you went on your first date or got engaged. Maybe in your own yard or local park. Some people choose unique places like the zoo or the incline! I have lots of ideas, too, but the most important thing is that you’re comfortable there, and that it reflects your style.
What should we wear?
This is an easy one- wear something that you’re comfortable in! The goal is to get some natural, casual images of the two of you and that’s simplest when you’re completely at ease. Often couples like to both wear the same pants (jeans, khakis, etc) and coordinate their tops in complementary colors.
I would avoid words, logos, loud colors and patterns that might be distracting. Keep in mind that darker colors are the most slimming!
Ladies- I love fun shoes, scarves, and hair! Bring a small mirror, makeup, and brush for any touchups.
Gentlemen- yes, you can bring your dog! Just give me a heads up so that we can figure out logistics ahead of time.
Most importantly, wear something that you feel defines your own personal style. After all, our photoshoot is all about capturing the essence of YOU!
What can you do with the images?
Often couples decide to frame a matted engagement photo for display outside their reception, so that guests may sign. You can give them as gifts to your parents (perfect for the rehearsal dinner!) or send them to the local newspaper. Many couples use the photographs on their Save the Date cards, magnets, or even as centerpieces at the reception. And they look beautiful hung prominently alongside the formal wedding portraits in your home!
I also use them on your wedding day, as printed handouts for your guests to take home, with a direct link to your online wedding day photo album (like the one below for Dante and Rebecca). So that your guests can pull up your images directly on their own, without relying on you to give them the information!
